The Reason why Stainless Steel such a Popular Alloy

Steel is one of the most popular alloys with a wide range of applications. There are many forms of steel, and one is ‘stainless steel’ which has a shiny surface and is resistant to any rust or corrosion.  Stainless steel is an alloy of iron and chromium; however, some of the time, even nickel and other materials are also used.

What makes Stainless Steel Important?

When it comes to usage, stainless steel has a wide commercial and industrial purpose. In the construction sector, stainless steel is a ‘green material’ due to its quality, durability, and sustainability. As an alloy, it is inert and eco-friendly, which makes it an excellent choice in sustainable construction.

Stainless steel is and is used in a wide range of industries such as construction and transport. It is also an important component of many machines and tools. The many reasons why stainless steel serve such wide functions are

  • Visually appealing
  • Easy to clean and maintain
  • Highly durable

Ordinary steel is an alloy of iron and carbon. In contrast, stainless steel consists of iron along with 10.5% chromium and 1.2% carbon. There is the addition of elements such as nickel, manganese, and titanium to enhance the mechanical properties and resistance of stainless steel.

When air or water comes in contact with ordinary steel, then it leads to rust. On the other hand, when oxygen comes in contact with chromium, then it forms a ‘chromium oxide’ layer on the surface of steel and protects it from rust or corrosion.

Due to their incredible strength and durability, custom stainless steel rings are a common feature of many applications. The purpose of custom rings is to make them useful for particular functions. Most of the custom rings are useful in welding and other marine applications. The inclusion of stainless steel makes the rings resist corrosion and increase the longevity of the tool. There are few companies that design and develop custom rings due to their use across various industries.

The custom stainless steel rings are in stock and available when required by a food processing or beverage-making company. Many factories and plants require stainless steel rings of a particular size and design.

The Properties of Stainless Steel

The advancement of technology makes it easy to develop custom rings according to specific requirements. The properties that make stainless steel such a popular choice in making custom rings

  • Mechanical properties

There are many sturdy metals and other alloys, but stainless steel has distinctive features. The stainless steel ring can display strong quality under ambient temperature. The main compound is steel that comes with its own advantages, such as

  • Hardness
  • Elasticity
  • Ductility

Apart from the qualities, the stainless steel does not wear or tear at high or low temperature

  • Resistance to corrosion

The number one reason why we see such massive use of stainless steel is its feature of resistance to corrosion. There are many metals and alloys that rust if exposed to air or water for long periods. The presence of 10.5% is what forms a protective layer. Another outstanding feature is regenerating itself when scraped or scratched.

  • Visual appearance

The striking feature of stainless steel is its shiny surface. There are a variety of from bright to matt and engraved. The custom rings can also be embossed that makes the rings more appealing.

  • Easy to clean

Another advantage of stainless steel is that it is easy to clean and maintain. One can easily clean the custom rings with detergents that do not damage the surface.

  • Sustainability

Experts name stainless steel as ‘green material’ due to its recyclability. In the construction sector, the recovery rate is almost 100%. Stainless steel is eco-friendly, and due to its surface, it can easily fulfill particular functions. The durability of stainless steel makes it an ideal choice for construction purposes, drain water pipes, and roofs.

The Advantages of Using Stainless Steel

One key use of stainless steel rings is in the welding process due to their effective corrosion resistance, sturdiness, and longevity. The four grades of stainless steel for particular welding requirements are

  1. Ferritic: It has 10% to 30% chromium. This alloy is not that hard, so it can easily be welded
  2. Austenitic: It comprises 15% to 25% chromium and 8% to 20% nickel. This alloy can easily be welded by using TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas) or MIG (Metal Inert Gas). Also, there is no need for pre or post-heating.
  3. Martensitic: It contains 12% to 18% chromium but a low quantity of nickel.
  4. Austenitic-ferritic: The duplex alloy contains 20% to 25% chromium and 5% to 8% nickel. Also, the modern duplex steels are easily wieldable.

The stainless steel rings serve a wide range of operations which includes

  • Plasma cutting
  • Dynamic waterjet cutting
  • Machine cutting
  • Heating elements
  • Resistance coils
  • Gears, bearings, and heavy machines
  • Cylindrical grinding
  • Pressure vessels

Stainless steel can withstand high temperatures, but welding it can be challenging. There are different methods to weld stainless steel that includes metal arc welding, tungsten gas arc welding, and stick welding. Some of the factors that are necessary to consider are

  • The skill and experience of the welder
  • The thickness of the metal or steel surface
  • Looks and aesthetics of the piece

Metal arc welding or MIG is a better welding process of stainless steel. To avoid warping, it is better to place or clamp a piece of copper or brass behind the seam of the weld. The piece of copper or brass acts as a heat sink and absorbs the excess heat and ensures seamless welding.

Stainless steel rings are getting quite popular due to their features and advantages. The custom rings are developed according to particular requirements and applications. Most of the rings are available in a variety of finishes. The rings are 100% recyclable and long-lasting.

When compared with other metals and alloys, stainless steel has better resistance when it comes to structural application. The stainless steel can withstand temperatures as high as 800’C, which is also why custom stainless steel rings are best for welding tools.
